Ways We Can Help
With years of experience working with the families of gender variant and transgender children and teens, Gender Spectrum offers a variety of services that parents can turn to for help.
Individual consultation: Parents can make appointments for personal consultations with Gender Spectrum staff. Particularly as parents are becoming aware of their child’s gender nonconformity, these discussions can help parents develop perspective about the range of issues they may be grappling with. Such meetings can also be helpful when parents are struggling to get on the same page about their child’s gender.
Gender Spectrum Family Conference: This annual event, including parent workshops, teen programming and a kids camp, provides a safe and supportive space in which families can delve deeply into the issues associated wit their child’s gender nonconformity. Designed to “meet families where they are,” the conference is for all parents, regardless of the degree of acceptance they have for their child. Surrounded by others who have struggled with many of the same issues, parents can use this event to help clarify approaches, deepen their knowledge, or simply recognize that they are not alone.
Support groups: One of the most challenging aspects of raising gender nonconforming children is the sense of isolation that comes with it. Through Gender Spectrum’s support groups, parents can count on a consistent opportunity to meet other parents, raise questions, seek and share resources, or simply listen to the experiences of others. Gender Spectrum offers in person support groups in Seattle, WA and Oakland, CA and a national call-in support group on a monthly basis.
