Support for Families

Do you have a child whose gender expression is outside of typical gender norms? Does your child - or a child you know - prefer to wear the clothes of the "opposite" gender or ask/insist that you refer to them with the "opposite" pronoun? Do you struggle with how best to support your child while helping them stay safe?

You are not alone—come share your experiences with other parents and family members. Gender Spectrum offers a monthly support and information group for parents of gender variant and transgender children. We meet regularly to discuss what gender variance means to our children and our families. Through examination of current research and sharing with each other, we learn to navigate our own struggles, support our children in the best way possible, and work to make the world a safer place for our children.

In addition to the support groups, we offer individual consultations to help you have a greater understanding of how to best support your gender variant child – legally, socially, and educationally. We tailor our work to the specific needs and considerations of each child, the desires of the family, and the child's school culture and environment. We provide practical support, resources, and simple-to-implement methods (such as changing names and/or gender pronouns at school) for educational institutions and families to provide a safe and equitable environment for all children.

We also highly recommend attending the 2008 Gender Spectrum Family Conference in Seattle on Labor Day weekend, August 30 - 31, 2008.

Seminars

Gender Identity and Children Seminars
presented by Stephanie Brill

We offer one-day comprehensive seminars for professionals who work directly with gender variant teens and children. We invite counselors, therapists teachers, school administrators, social service providers, and others to attend. The seminars are designed to increase your understanding of gender identity and the children who fit outside gender norms.

The seminars address:

  • What is gender variance?
  • What is transgender?
  • Is this a phase?
  • Should children be allowed to "transition"?

We will explore:

  • Medical issues and considerations
  • Parenting challenges
  • Age appropriate transition
  • Support groups for parents
  • Balancing the therapist's roles of gatekeeper and advocate
